PUBLIC SECURITY IN KRALJEVO - RANKOVIĆEVO (1944 - 1955)

The first decade after World War II is an important but still insufficiently known period in the scientific public regarding the activities of bodies in charge of public safety at the local level in the then Serbia, one of the republics of the then Democratic Federal Yugoslavia, and later on the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia. The intention of the author is to contribute with this text to the knowledge of the circumstances at the time of the founding of the city militia in 1945, about its activities and the tasks it faced until 1955.
In this paper, the historiographical methodological approach is applied. Primary and secondary historical sources were researched. Methods of analysis, synthesis, hypothetical-deductive method, as well as methods of generalization and concretization were used. In this paper, we strived to contribute to the knowledge about the impact of criminal phenomena on the society of that time, as well as the types, characteristics and success of the institutional fight against these phenomena.
This research, among other things, discusses the establishment and work of the city militia in the spring of 1945. Available sources indicate that the most important tasks of the security organs were to deal with the remnants of the Yugoslav Army in the Homeland (JVuO) movement. Then, the paper provides direct knowledge about some characteristic of the criminal phenomena that the public security bodies encountered: disturbing public order and peace, fights, prostitution, theft. The organizational structure of the public security services is presented.
The paper is primarily based on previously unused primary and original historical sources from the Historical Archive of Kraljevo and the Inter-municipal archive in Čačak. In addition to the above, for this paper we also used published sources, relevant literature and the press.
